Did You Know?
Boxers may be named for the fighters because they use their front paws to spar and play
They make excellent service and guide dogs
Like the Doberman, Boxers were once used in wartime as messengers and sentries!
They are often selected and trained for nosework jobs because their sense of smell is among the best!
The average speed for Boxers is 38mph! They descended from dogs further back than Roman Empire
They do best in mild climate...heat and cold are difficult for them (same, friend!)
They do the "kidney bean dance" - they curl into a half-circle and twirl!
While not originally bred for it, Boxers are often used for herding sheep - and they're GREAT at it!
They snore like crazy!
Tips, Tricks, and Treats: Jumping Up!
While some of us would not complain if we’re taken out by a big happy dog who is super excited to see us, we still have to teach them not to jump. They could hurt smaller children or elderly, or maybe their paws are muddy and we’re on our way somewhere fancy! Dogs REALLY love us, and they want our attention - that’s why they jump! So we can do some things to help them make better choices to get our attention.
Teach them to sit every time they approach you. Do this by giving them pets or treats ONLY when they sit, and trying to ignore them every time they jump. Don’t even make eye contact!
“Statue” - Freeze like statue every time they jump on you. Look at the sky, and say “off” (or “sit”)
“Paws Off” - play with them, let them jump around and be silly, but as soon as they touch you, turn into a statue and look at the sky. Say “Paws Off” as you freeze!
Since dogs jump when they’re excited, teach them to go get a toy for you instead. Get really REALLY excited when they go get a toy, ignore them when they jump.
Celebrity Boxers!
Although Boxers may be REALLY popular in real life, there aren’t many of them in movies and TV…but they still live among the Hollywood (and Bollywood) stars! Sprinkled into the pictures of our sweet friend Ryker are some photos of celebrities and their Boxer dogs. Click the pic to see who they are!
